FIRST is an acronym which stands for
"For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology".

FIRST is an organization created for the specific purpose of sparking an interest in science and technology among high school students. FIRST manages to accomplish this goal by organizing a yearly robotics competition. During the duration of the competition students interact with teachers, industry professionals, and sponsors from the community. Their purpose is to design, build, and operate a robot, and to maintaining all of the supporting structure.

This competition is not just limited to the design and building of the robot, it also introduces organizational and crisis-management skills to high school students. In the ideal situation the students should be in charge of everything, but as they do not yet have the experience to accomplish everything, teachers and industry leaders, along with parents and others from the community in general, act as mentors, helping to better prepare the students for life in the workplace.

The philosophy of our FIRST team, Aztechs Team 157, is:

"The only way to predict the future is to design it."
